On September 18th, 2007, we opened applewares, a small cookwares shop catering to the professional and home cook alike. We'd grown tired of running to Manhattan everytime we needed new equipment for the restaurant, so we figured other folks in the neighborhood probably felt the same. applewares is at 548 10th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues, just one short block from applewood. We carry peelers, blenders, knives, wine glasses, cutting boards, locally-made pottery, and cast iron pans, just to name a few items in our selection. We are happy to special order anything that we have access to and look forward to seeing you soon!
a little about us
David grew up in Greenwich Village, and Laura in Chicago, Illinois. The two met while attending the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. After graduating in 1997, the couple moved to Chicago where Laura left the kitchen for a career in restaurant management and David quickly established a stellar reputation as a chef.
He first took the kitchen reins as the Executive Chef of the three-star, fine dining restaurant, Spruce, and then as the Executive Chef at the newly opened Twelve 12. Laura managed two high-profile fine dining restaurants, followed by the opening of a privately-owned and critically-acclaimed wine bar.
Moving back to New York and opening their own place was always their shared dream and, finally, in 2003, they made their way back to the city. They found an apartment in Brooklyn and began their search for a restaurant of their own. After checking out a great many spots, they found the perfect space in Park Slope that matched their vision exactly. In September of 2004, they realized this vision in the form of applewood restaurant.
The Sheas have made applewood a departure from almost all other restaurants with their complete devotion to supporting local farmers, their exclusive use of hormone- and antibiotic-free meats and poultry, as well as wild fish, and their on-site butchering of whole animals including lamb, goat, deer, and pigs (to name a few).
